On this day, 80 years ago, the Allies of World War II formally accepted Germany’s unconditional surrender — Tuesday, May 8, 1945.
This historic moment is known as VE Day – Victory in Europe Day.
In the shadow of today’s troubled world, I sometimes find myself asking: Will humanity ever truly learn?
Since the mid-1970s, I’ve interviewed hundreds of veterans who fought for our freedom during that terrible war. The more I listened to them, the more deeply I came to respect and admire their courage, their sacrifice, and their struggle. Most of them are gone now.
And sometimes I wonder — was their struggle in vain?
What can I do about it? Nothing, perhaps.
But I believe one thing might still help: telling their stories.
Keeping their memories alive in the hope that one day, the world will become the peaceful place they fought so hard to make possible.
Happy VE Day, my friends. Let us never forget.
